Due to huge demand and support from the hospitality industry for a suitable professional qualification, and having researched many options amongst English speaking countries, the new Cape Sommelier Programme is being implemented in South Africa through the Cape Wine Academy.
With 2010 around the corner, the food and wine sector needs to ready itself in order to manage the thousands of tourists who will descend upon South Africa, from different corners of the world, all with different tastes and needs.
Worldwide, a Sommelier, pronounced (Soh-mell-Yay), is known to be a highly trained and knowledgeable wine professional, commonly working in fine restaurants, specialising in all aspects of wine service. This position is far more specialised and informed than that of a wine waiter.
Says Marilyn Cooper, Cape Wine Master and Managing Director of the Cape Wine Academy, "The Cape Wine Academy is very proud to launch the first Cape Sommelier programme in South Africa. Nicci will prove to be a fine ambassador for us in Kenya. She is the first Cape Sommelier to receive this qualification and as such I am sure she will be a role model for many more female Sommeliers in this country."
Says Germain Lehody, International Sommelier and Restaurateur, and 2008 panel Chairperson, "Achieving Sommelier status means that this person is probably the most qualified professional in the industry to match food with wine in any establishment worldwide. Any establishment employing a Sommelier illustrates its absolute attention to service and guest relationships."
