We travelled deep into the heart of the ancient cork forests to witness the annual cork harvest, a wonderful sight outsiders rarely experience. Towards 2010 - and Beyond
It seems appropriate as the 2008 harvest rolls in and marketers embark on another round of hunt-the-customer, that we as an industry take stock of our situation and assess and reflect on what is going to drive consumers' needs in the future. This is arguably an even more important facet of what we do than processing the latest harvest and one often neglected by wine companies the world over. Madame Arcati, the peculiar medium in Noël Coward’s comedy Blithe Spirit, is a most appropriate name for an anonymous wine blog. First off, pseudonyms should be feminine, as the traction attained by Noseweek pundit Tim James as The Widow on www.grape.org.za confirms. Madame Arcati directs events through séances which are a most suitable analogue for blind tastings – often rigged, they are an attempt to communicate with the dead – in this case, the terroir of vintages past.
