Mandy and George have a 12year old son. After school she did a legal secretarial course at the Cape Tech and worked for attorneys for 21 years before she started running the venue at Kaapzicht.
Initially the braai venue was run as a restaurant but the gentleman who ran it unfortunately died and the place basically stood empty. When people came for wine tasting they would enquire as to whether we hired the place out for parties etc and I got the role of hiring out the venue (this was whilst I was still working for attorneys).
Their son was about 3 years old at the time and as the hiring out of the venue took off to such a big extent, and she wanted to spend more time with their son, she decided to give up her job and do the hiring out of the venue so that she could work from home.
Initially people would just hire the venue from us and do their own thing, but over the years this has changed. We now offer a braai venue which can house approximately 60 guests. Our large venue can now house approximately 280 guests with dancing and our smaller venue can house approximately 100 guests with dancing. Today we have an inhouse caterer and also offer decor and flowers.
The venue attracts mostly brides, although we do cater for birthday parties and corporate functions. By having functions on the farm I feel it is a way of introducing the public to our estate and a great way of advertising our wines.
"I hope to offer brides, partygoers, guests etc still a "farmlike" experience here at Kaapzicht, which I find is missing from a lot of wine estates today".
