HERITAGE
Lying on the slopes of the world-famous Chapman's Peak, and abutting the Table Mountain National Park in Noordhoek, Cape Point Vineyards is set high in a backdrop of flora and fauna with breathtaking vistas of mountains and ocean at every turn. This narrow peninsula was initially discovered in the 15th Century by the Portuguese seafarer, Bartholomew Diaz. In 1752 at least 30 000 vines were registered for excise purposes on the existing Cape Point Vineyards farm. Re-planted in 1996 by owner Sybrand van der Spuy, Cape Point Vineyards has enjoyed award-winning status ever since its maiden vintage. The establishment of the vineyard and the estate's cellar led to the declaration of the Cape Point Wine of Origin district in 1998.

LOCATION
The Cape Point Vineyards are planted on two estates: Noordhoek, and Scarborough, situated on the Cape Point peninsula.

Cool sea breezes from the confluence of the two oceans of differing temperatures directly affects this narrow strip of land (11kms at its widest point) where grapes enjoy slow-ripening conditions, ideal for producing premium wines.

Each of the terroirs, with an excellent variety of soil & micro-climatic conditions, were selected for their specific suitability to the cultivation of particular varieties.

On the cool south-facing slopes of Noordhoek Estate, Sauvignon blanc, Semillon and Chardonnay were planted. The warmer north-facing slopes on Scarborough Estate were selected for their potential to produce premium red wines, being planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

The establishment of these vineyards and the Cape Point Vineyards cellar (the only ones in the district) prompted the declaration of the new Cape Point Wine of Origin district in 1998.

WINEMAKER - DUNCAN SAVAGE
Duncan joined Cape Point Vineyards in December 2002 after graduating from Elsenburg Agricultural College as top student while making wines for other farms through the College. "We are in a unique position to be able to concentrate on a small variety base which performs well and is suited to our terrior; such as we have seen with Sauvignon blanc and Semillon. Our aim is to retain this focus. The potential is mind-blowing and it's exciting to work with a great team in a beautiful setting."
Informed by extensive travels and working stints in the Sauvignon Blanc producing areas in France, Australia, New Zealand, Duncan's aim is to establish Cape Point Vineyards as one of the world's leading Sauvignon Blanc producers in the world. Duncan advocates 'traditional methods in the cellar and an intense focus on the land' as the secret to producing award-winning wines.
