Sauvignon Blanc experience at La Motte

Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche took us on an educational journey and a sensory discovery in the planting and making of Sauvignon Blanc. We were not only introduced to information consisting of plantings around the world but also the birth of this versatile grape on their home soil at La Motte in the heart of the Franschhoek valley. What blew my mind was the varied flavour profiles of the fermenting juice in the tanks at the La Motte Cellars. Edmund and Michael, both winemakers at La Motte, gave us a tasting of the various terroir pockets from Napier to Elgin and then back to Stellenbosch and onto La Motte soils again, so much diversity with Stellenbosch being more fruit driven and bigger fruit profile than Franschhoek which was elegant and more refined. Fascinating, not to mention the food and wine pairing during our lunch at Pierneef Restuarant, a must visit.
