Bouchard Finlayson Galpin Peak Pinot Noir 1998

Attractive, optimally ripe fruit with cherry and oak scents. These combine to give great definition. It is firm and has a nicely balanced middle weight with tight aromatic tannins which point to a need for maturation before gaining its best potential. Maturation took place in all Burgundian barrels with 25 % new wood compliment striking a fine balance with the rich fruit in the wine.

in the cellar : The best Pinot Noirs stand virtually alone in the world's red wine theatre only to be matched in price by premier Bordeaux bottlings. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley in Hermanus has proved to be an exception in the hunt for the illusive Pinot noir "terroir" outside of Burgundy. It is this particular soil and micro-climate which has once again offered a vintage with its own particular characteristic.

The 1998 vintage was very early ripening (23rd-29th January), with all the grapes reaching the cellar within seven days. In contrast to the previous year where harvest started in the middle of February. The fruit was firm and healthy which meant swift deliveries of excellent grapes to the cellar.
