Morgenster Nabucco 2008

Colour: Deep concentrated bright pomegranate red.
Nose: An introduction of sweet red cherries, rose and lilac notes and hints of ripe tomato and truffles.
Palate: The superb balance between the minerality and sweet fruit, together with the kirsch, cranberry type tanginess, makes for a very thought provoking and appealing palate. A complete wine with loads of structure and intensity. This refined, elegant, deeply nuanced wine will need a few years to come together and will still offer much pleasure at age 20.

Enjoy either on its own or served with Italian dishes like risotto, red meats and mature cheeses.

ageing : This wine's refined, elegant and deeply nuanced characteristics will see it still performing when it comes of age, still offering much pleasure. If drinking now, decant for about 2 hours ahead of serving.

in the vineyard : The wine is one of three in Morgenster's Italian Collection, owner Giulio Bertrand's project to produce excellent wine in South Africa from Italian cultivars. The planting of 1.6 hectares of the naturally low yielding vines took nearly six years to complete and this is the 5th crop. However as the team builds its knowledge of viticultural practice and the vines start to mature, excitement in the cellar is mounting. Named for Giulio Bertrand's favourite opera, total production of Nabucco was only 290 cases.

Following good winter rains, cooler temperatures delayed bud break and eventually harvest. This had good consequences for the wines as they produced great depth of fruit and elegant structures. 2008 will be remembered for its elegant wines.

Vineyards: Stellenbosch
Region: Helderberg ward

in the cellar : Following its maiden launch of 700 bottles of the single cultivar in 2006, this is Morgenster’s second release of its Nebbiolo, which this year is blended with Merlot and Petit Verdot.

15 months in tight grain French oak barrels.
