Spier Creative Block 8 2013

Dark, intense colour with youthful brightness. A dense concentration of fruit precedes delicate spicy aromas that lead onto cool vanilla notes. The wine is young and filled with fruit infusions similar to black forest cake, truffle and marzipan. A remarkable wine that develops with dense, firm tannins that benefit from decanting.

Roast beef, roast lamb, Sunday carver.

in the vineyard : Cool south eastern facing slopes of decomposed granite on clay sub soil with great water retention from the Darling, Paarl and Stellenbosch regions. 12-17 year old vines planted on a vertical trellis system to allow for easy foliage management to have a good balance of leaves to ensure exposure to the sun and slow development of the fruit to ensure phenolic ripeness at lower sugar levels. The vines are 7 - 25 km from the cold Atlantic ocean and have average temperatures of 9 - 19 °C during winter and 13 – 29 °C for the summer with an average annual rainfall of 450 mm.

in the cellar : This Cape blend of 8 varieties include Pinotage, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre and a touch of Viognier for femininity. All the grapes were harvested and sorted individually, fermented and aged separately for 16 months in a combination of French oak barrels with 50% first fill and the balance second fill.
