SAA’s 2006 on board wine list announced
08 November 2005  by SAA
South African Airways (SAA) congratulates all the winners in its 19th annual Wine Awards 2006, as well as those who will feature on board the airline’s local, regional and international routes for the rest of the coming year.
The 2006 award winners are as follows:

Red Wine Trophy - Anura Reserve Syrah/Mourvèdre 2003

White Wine Trophy - Kumkani Lanner Hill Sauvignon Blanc 2005

Port Trophy - De Krans Cape Tawny Port

Methode Cap Classique Trophy - JC Le Roux Scintilla 2001

SAA Chief Executive Officer trophy for the most wines listed on SAA in 2006 goes to Cloof Wine Estate and Stellenzicht Vineyards.

SAA Chairman’s Wine Award for the largest volume of wine sold to SAA is presented to Boland Kelder.

SAA customers will be spoilt for choice with a list of exceptional local wines chosen by 12 acclaimed local and international judges during a rigorous tasting and selection session in August this year.

International judges were; Eduardo Chadwick (Chile), Kym Milne (Australia), Jean Trimbach (France, Alsace region), Lynne Sherriff (United Kingdom), John Avery (United Kingdom) and Bengt Kronstam (Swedish).

South African judges were; Yegas Naidoo, Mzokhona Mvemve, Jo-Ann Mettler, Colin Frith, Cathy Marshall and Dave Hughes.

The wines are exclusively South African, an essential criteria when entering into the selection for consideration on board SAA flights.
“South African wines are known to be some of the best in the world. SAA is proud to support local producers and contribute towards their success in the wine industry,” says Molebatsi Moagi, SAA General Manager Sales and Voyager.

“SAA seeks to provide a platform for local winemakers to showcase and highlight their abilities to compete amongst the best in the world and to recognise them for their superb creations,” says Moagi.

The Wine Selection process provides local producers with the opportunity to interact with experts in the industry and to receive feedback and advice on ways to improve their winemaking technique.

SAA would also like to encourage more people, especially the youth, to take an interest in this highly fulfilling career, thereby developing the future of wine producing in South Africa.

“SAA would like to instil that appreciation and passion that lovers of wine have in more people to ensure the continued high quality that is expected of South African wines.”

SAA received a record 1060 entries from local producers at a cost of R200 per contribution. As a result, over R200 000 was collected in total and will be donated, as is the case each year, to the SA Wine Trust to educate a previously disadvantaged student at Stellenbosch University.

Wrong listing Lindy viljoen - 10 November 2005
Viljoensdrift River Grandeur Sauvignon Blanc - listed under economy class, should be listed under First Class
cheap seats wine list DAVID LOCKLEY - 10 November 2005
Having such a great wine list means nothing, cause we fly the cheap seats and only allowed 187ml wine. The water sometimes is 250mls
