We hold regular workshops at Babylonstoren as we see it as an ideal opportunity to share what we’ve learned – not only about our garden but about gardening in general, with you. We also regularly invite guests who are experts in their fields to host these workshops in collaboration with our gardening team.
Our workshops tend to be small, with no more than 20 people per group. They’re also quite hands-on so you will get to try out the skills, technique or discipline that we’re learning about. All our workshops include a walk through the garden and as such it’s usually a full-day affair.  

24 February –Waterwise Gardening
Make every drop count withwaterwisegardening. Botanist Ernst van Jaarsveld will share his tips on how to create a garden thatneeds little wateryetoffers a haven to local wildlife.

4 March–Pumpkin Fun Day
Bring the kids for a sunset pumpkin feast, including a treasure hunt in the garden, pumpkin carving and delicious pumpkin treats.17h00–20h00, R150p.p.

6 April–Spur Sage Workshop
Most spur sage (Plectranthus) are shade-loving, fast- and easy-growing perennials with showy, abundant flowers in autumn. Learn how to grow these indigenous beauties with Ernst van Jaarsveld.

13 or 20 April – Olive Workshop
Discover the ancient art of making olive oil and preserving olives with Linda Costa, the doyenne of the South African olive industry, and Klaas Stoffberg, the man in charge of our olive press.

18 May – Distilling Workshop
Light the fire under our copper kettle. Join Andries van der Walt in our cellar and learn how to distil mampoer from seasonal fruit.

25 May – Cycad Workshop
Explore our cycad collection with Ernst van Jaarsveld, and learn how to choose and care for these living fossils.

8 June – Teas & Tisanes
Stay warm and healthy with teas and tisanes this winter. Gundula Deutschlander shares her knowledge of ancient and modern herbalism and demonstrates how to make kombucha.

15 June – Aloe Workshop
Come and spend the day with Ernst, well known South African succulent expert and author of the recently published Tree Aloes of Africa.

20 July– Mushroom Workshop
Love mushrooms? Learn how to grow and use shiitake and oyster mushrooms with mushroom growers Kotie van Tonder and Danica Resoort.

27 July –Veldkos
Learn to identify indigenous veldkosso you can livea life that is better sustainable and eat food that is local, with botanist Ernst van Jaarsveld.

3 or 17 August – Espalier & Pruning Workshop
Learn from the master of secateurs, Anton Roux, how to propagate, graft, plant and prune various fruit trees into espaliers. 

14 September – Clivia Workshop 
Clivia specialist and active member of the Cape Clivia Club, HeinieHeydenrych, will be hosting a hands-on clivia workshop. You will also see our thousands of clivias in bloom.

12 October – Herb Workshop
The garden team will show you how to grow and use fresh herbs to make a whole range of herb potions to purify body, home and soul.

19 or 26 October – The Secret Life of Bees 
Spring’s warmer weather brings a buzz to the garden. Get a closer look at what goes on inside a beehive with local bee expert, Mike Allsopp.

16 November – Growing Organic Salads
Organic producer, Tia Cusden, joins us all the way from England to share her wealth of knowledge about growing salad leaves. We also get practical, planting a box with summer salads for easy harvesting at home.

7 December – Succulents Workshop
The succulent richness of South Africa is well known throughout the world. Botanist and succulent expert, Ernst van Jaarsveld, demonstrates how to choose and propagate succulents for your garden.

Our Workshops are quite hands-on so you will get to try out the skills, technique or discipline that we’re learning about. All our workshops include a walk through the garden and as such it’s usually a full-day affair.
Please meet us at the Farm Shop entrance at 10h00. 

Remember to wear comfortable shoes, bring a hat in summer and wellies plus an umbrella in winter. (A famous Swedish proverb holds - There ain't no bad weather, just the wrong clothes.)  

All workshops cost R550p.p. (except the Pumpkin Fun Day) and includes a light lunch, takes place from 10h00 to 16h00 and starts at the Farm Shop.
