Creation Wines
Held in Sierre, Switzerland, this key international wine event drew almost 1 300 entries from 25 countries this year. The fact that a mere 8% was awarded the coveted gold medal is an indication of the rigorous selection process followed by the internationally renowned panel of judges.
The Mondial des Pinots highlights the elegance and
subtlety but also the terroir-specific traits of the Pinot cultivar, offering producers the opportunity to measure the quality of their
wines against the world’s best. The
Creation Reserve Pinot Noir 2012 and 2013 were both awarded a
glittering gold while the Creation Pinot Noir 2012 and 2013 each received a
silver medal.
The cool climate Hemel-en-Aarde
where Creation is situated has long been famous for its Pinot Noir. The farm’s
specific setting on the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge combines a close proximity to the
cold Atlantic Ocean with an elevation of 300 metres above sea level to offer cool conditions,
ideal for the slow ripening of Pinot Noir. Another advantage is the
450-million-year-old clay derived Bokkeveld shale soils. According to co-owner,
cellarmaster and viticulturist Jean-Claude Martin the decomposed, Bokkeveld
shale soils offer not only a wealth of minerals but also excellent water
retention. This means they seldom have to irrigate once the young vines have
settled.
“Pinot Noir is the
ultimate test in winemaking and Creation’s virus-free vines coupled with cooler
night temperatures and long, slow ripening result in great fruit with a natural
acidity,” says Jean-Claude.
