This week, we feature Brookdale Mason Road Serendipity Rosé 2022 as the Wine of the Week – an ode to the transition of summer to autumn.

Kiara Scott Farmer, winemaker at Brookdale Estate.

Set in a fertile valley, Brookdale Estate is tucked between the ancient granite mountains of the Klein Drakenstein and lush Paarl vineyards and farmlands. It’s a special place where old-world sophistication and new world bravery collide.

The estate is owned by the Rudd family, and it’s the pinnacle of their passions. Here, Mediterranean varieties, a unique Paarl terroir and unusual winemaking techniques are brought together under the visionary hand of proprietor, Tim Rudd, and winemaker, Kiara Scott Farmer. They produce fine and interesting Mediterranean wines in a South African context.

Brookdale Estate is also home to an elegant Manor House, a modern wine cellar, and a gorgeous Tasting Room and Bistro. At their tasting lounge and restaurant, you can expect the unexpected with tasting experiences that serve to nourish your mind as much as your palate along with menus crafted by Gary Coetzee.

Their wines will spark your interest while they dance along your palate.

Part of Brookdale’s Mason Road wine range, Serendipity Rosé is exactly that – a moment where chance and opportunity came together. You see, this beautiful rosé was never meant to happen…

A single block of Grenache Noir had been planted at Brookdale to create a notable red wine blend. However, on the day of its first harvest in 2020, Tim and Kiara were tasting the grapes and were inspired to use the entire block for an elegant rosé blend.

“It was a complete leap of faith and the result is a summery, medium-bodied rosé as unexpected as it is marvellous. Proof that exploration of the unknown can result in something truly remarkable!” says Kiara.

The wine was popular right from the first vintage. A testament to the curious and to elegant South African rosé wines, Serendipity Rosé is made in the Provence-style, boasting a beautiful, pale salmon pink colour.

Brookdale Mason Road Serendipity Rosé 2022 is a blend of Syrah, Grenache Noir, and Cinsault. It’s a vegan, Provence-style rosé with a pale salmon pink colour.

Its elegant nose offers fragrant notes of hibiscus, fynbos-spice and wild strawberries. The palate is red-fruited and generous, plumped with raspberries, mulberries and sappy cherries; then lifted on the mid-palate with refreshing watermelon verve. Keenly balanced with a lemony acidity, all that beautiful, bright fruit is cradled in a fine-boned structure imbued from old oak ageing.

Rosé wine is widely known as one of the fastest growing wine categories. Says Kiara: “Gone are the days of having rosé only at the poolside!”

“Our South African rosés are becoming serious wines that you can enjoy with food or by itself. I love the Mason Road Serendipity Rosé because of its versatility. It offers so much, a beautiful bouquet of flavours with refreshing acidity, with a small portion wooded that adds to a well-rounded mouthfeel.”

Serendipity is a testament to the curious, and to elegant South African rosé wines.
