Several grape varieties ripened at the same time and the cellar team had to think on their feet to navigate bottlenecks. Muratie Wine Estate's nemaker Hattingh estimates that this year's crop size is 10-15% lighter than last year, but at the same time there has been a significant improvement in grape quality. The young wines in the tanks and barrels are showing magnificent intensity and depth of flavour. Watch this space for promising Vintage 2024 releases!
Now our focus turns to the vineyards, which need some extra care and attention after a demanding hot and dry growing season. Weeding, fertilisation, and sowing of cover crops for the winter are some of the actions taking place. Like the legendary Mr May of old, we are keeping a keen eye out for rainclouds hopefully coming soon to the south-west facing slopes of the Simonsberg. Good rains are much needed to refresh the vines and replenish groundwater levels.
