Kleine Zalze
While Sauvignon Blanc Day is celebrated worldwide on 3 May, Kleine Zalze is celebrating for the whole month of May.

Celebrating Sauvignon Blanc

International Sauvignon Blanc Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of May. This day is dedicated to the iconic wine grape variety, and offers an occasion for wine enthusiasts worldwide to appreciate and celebrate this enticing wine. We've collected a few Sauvignon Blanc facts to help you appreciate one of our favourite cultivars even more:

  • Sauvignon Blanc is a green-skinned grape variety and is indigenous to southwestern France.
  • The grape has been grown in France for at least 500 years and most likely gets its name from the French words sauvage ("wild") and blanc ("white") due to its early origins.
  • Today Sauvignon Blanc is widely cultivated in France, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile, Australia and a few other countries.
  • Sauvignon Blanc produces mostly crisp, dry, and refreshing white wines but the grape is also a component of the famous dessert wines from Sauternes and Barsac.
  • Sauvignon Blanc’s thin skin makes it extremely sensitive to climate and depending on the climate, the flavour can range from aggressively grassy to sweetly tropical.
  • In cooler climates, the grape has a tendency to produce wines with noticeable acidity and "green flavours" of grass, green bell peppers and nettles with some tropical fruit and floral notes.
  • In warmer climates, it develops more tropical fruit notes but risks losing aroma if over-ripe.
