Far more than just fortifieds, that is Boplaas Family Vineyards located in the sleepy Klein Karoo hamlet of Calitzdorp and home to the Nel’s since the mid-19th century. A multi-award winning cellar, Boplaas’s vinous heritage can be traced back to 1880 when Daniel Nel, exported his first order of fine potstill brandy which was sent by ox-wagon to Worcester and onto Cape Town harbour with the steam train where it finally boarded a postal ship to London. This practice was continued for many a year until all the farmers’ licenses were revoked, where after more than 70 dry years passed, before the very first brandy was once again distilled in 1989 and the release of South Africa’s first Estate Brandy in 1994 with the Boplaas 5 Year Estate Potstill Brandy. Continuing this heritage, Boplaas is proud to announce the limited release of 1000 bottles of the Carel Nel 15 Year Reserve Brandy, crafted by Daniel Nel’s great great grandson Carel. This blended brandy with its potstill component crafted from a double distilled Colombard aged for 15 years in French oak barriques, displays a wonderful amber-gold colour and expressive bouquet filled with layers upon layers of ripe apricot, dried peach, orange rind, fynbos honey, cocoa nibs, sweet wood spice and hints of liquorice, vanilla and toasted oak. A finely balanced palate of flavours following through from the bouquet, with bees wax and honey notes round out the fiery edges. This fine Boplaas brandy is best enjoyed on the rocks or with a splash of spring water while savouring the accomplishments of the day; alternatively enjoy mixed with soda or Tradouw apple juice. The Carel Nel 15 Year Reserve Brandy, joins the Carel Nel 5 Year Brandy, Boplaas 8 Year Potstill Brandy and the Boplaas 20 Year Old Postill Reserve Brandy.
