Morgenster receives high ratings

Morgenster’s 2009 vintage rated 90 and 91 by the Wine Advocate
23 January 2013  by Morgenster
In December 2012 Morgenster’s newest releases were rated by Wine Advocate. Morgenster 2009 received 91 points and Lourens River Valley 2009 received 90 points.
Owner Giulio Bertrand commented that the latest ratings were an endorsement of Wine Advocate’s ratings in September 2011. “Morgenster 2003 and 2005 received 93 and Morgenster 2006 received 94 points at a stage when they had aged for a few years. Eight of the Estate’s Bordeaux blends received between 90 and 94 points then”, he said.

“The latest results for the two 2009 Bordeaux blends reinforce their consistency, with the previous results confirming that Morgenster’s Bordeaux blends are ageing wonderfully”, he said.

Wine Advocate’s ratings and notes from December 2012:

Morgenster 2009 - 91 points
The 2009 Proprietary Red is a blend of 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 15% Petit Verdot and 14% Cabernet Franc that is aged for 18 months in 60% new oak. It has an attractive nose of fleshy redcurrant, fresh strawberry and raspberry fruit, the oak deftly folded into the aromatic profile and offers sandalwood and cedar notes with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and very Bordeaux-like in style, with tobacco-infused blackberry and strawberry fruit. It is a stately wine, perhaps foursquare compared to its peers, but very well crafted. Drink now-2018+

Morgenster Lourens River Valley 2009 - 90 points
The 2009 Lourens River Valley is a blend of 62% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon that is aged for 16 months in used French oak. It has a fresh bouquet of wild strawberry, melted tar, rosemary and mint. The palate is well defined with supple tannins. There is ripe red berry fruit laced with tobacco and spice, while the finish is rounded and generous, offering hints of white pepper on the aftertaste. This is a worthy addition to the Lourens River series. Drink now-2019.
