After 20 years in the wine industry and numerous, successful, Wade Bales Wine and Malt Whisky Affairs, meet the man behind The Wine Society, arguably, South Africa’s most exclusive ‘wine fraternity’ and win tickets to one of SA's best events!

The Wine and Malt Whisky Affairs continue to be a huge success – what do you put that down to?

A number of contributing reasons explain its success; Firstly, we believe the big format wine shows held in large and relatively lifeless banqueting halls have had their day. And even though they have been successful for well over a decade, the discerning consumer is looking for a more sophisticated and intimate experience, rather than the large format shows which tend to be overwhelming and impersonal. We also really liked the idea of combining fine wine and malt whisky to add a new dimension to the events we host and in doing so, appeal to a new customer who still fits the profile of person we deal with, which is, the more affluent and aspiration client who enjoys smaller, intimate and sophisticated experiences.
Secondly, a big part of the success of the event depends on finding the right venue. The space at the 5 star 15 on Orange Hotel with its cutting edge, almost funky interior, creates the perfect ambience for a unique and memorable experience. This coupled with a big focus on the quality and presentation of complimentary food available and the curated "by invite" selection of wine and whisky showcased, I believe has set the bar for top end lifestyle experiences in our country.

What can we expect from this year’s event?

You can expect the highest calibre of wine and whisky available in SA.
We are very specific about which producers we invite to showcase their products, each is hand selected to ensure that a ultra-premium product is experienced.
You can expect the food to be of the highest standards and our master classes showcase limited release products.

Who would best benefit from attending the event?

Wine and Whisky enthusiasts who want access and the opportunity to taste finally crafted and limited release products in a sophisticated and comfortable space alongside like-minded guests.

How would you describe your wine journey?

When I started in the wine industry 21 years ago, Nelson Mandela had just been released, the world wanted our wine and there were approximately 150 independent wineries. Today, this number has increased to around 700, 2 new generations of winemakers have entered the game with the zest and same self-belief as the best in the world.
Our wine industry is on the brink of the big time, it's just a matter of a year or two, and SA will secure its place as the most exciting new world wine making country on the planet. I have been fortunate and privileged to have had front row seats to the most dynamic 20 years in the history of SA wine. The next 20 are going to be phenomenal.

What the Wade Bales Wine so unique for wine lovers?

We set ourselves apart by offering highly personalized service and add value to our customers by understanding their exact wine needs and matching the right wine to their tastes.
Our role is to help the discerning consumer navigate through the complex world of wine, and ultimately enable them to enjoy, appreciate and serve wine with confidence.

Has 2014 shown any exciting developments for Wine, and for Whisky?

2014 has been the turning point were the international wine critics and commentators have finally started to recognize the huge strides in quality SA wines have achieved in the last decade.
Malt Whisky consumption continues to power ahead, with SA being one of the most important markets in the world.
