The IWSC judging panel described the wine as having “great balance with
firm tannins” and “good mature notes in a long finish”. The judges also advised
that although the wine was in great taste now it “still has loads of potential
to develop”.
In addition to the gold, Stellenzicht also collected silver medals for
the Stellenzicht Golden Triangle Pinotage 2012, Stellenzicht Golden Triangle
Shiraz 2010 and Stellenzicht Syrah 2005.
The 227 ha Stellenzicht has a rich history and is situated on the slopes
of the Helderberg Mountain between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. It lies in a
prime wine-growing area known locally for its exceptional terroir as the Golden
Triangle.
It has been a top performer at the IWSC and shows of similar calibre
over the years, with the farm and winemaker Guy Webber’s latest achievements
adding to the collection of awards.
The IWSC was founded in 1969 to promote the quality and excellence of
the world's best wines, spirits and liqueurs. It is the premier competition of
its kind thanks to an experienced panel of experts and rigorous two-stage
judging that incorporates blind tasting and laboratory analysis.
The IWSC’s award winning South African, Chilean and Argentine wines were
announced on September 10, on the first day of the Beautiful South Tasting at
Olympia Central in London. A banquet to showcase the best wines will take place
in London later this year too.
