What Wine: What Holiday?

It may be winter outside, but in my heart I'm dreaming of my next getaway and which wines I should be taking along with me.

Into the wild

If adventure is calling your name and your spirit animal is one of South Africa's Big Five, then heading into the bush/game reserve is the ideal break for you. Waking up early in the morning to track hard-to-find animals might not be everyone's cup of tea but the adventurer will certainly get a kick from this and, should they spot anything, will most likely be hankering for a celebratory and warming drink to toast with afterwards.

My pick has to be: A glass of award-winning De Krans Port

Beach bliss

It may be winter in South Africa but the feeling of sinking your feet into warm sand and eyeing an azure sea is incredibly alluring. If the bank account allows, get yourself to a warmer climate but if you can't get out of the country, you can head to the shores of Arniston Beach in the Overberg which is beautifully rustic and lined with thatched fishermen cottages. A fish braai would be the perfect way to spend an evening alongside a large glass of wine.

My pick has to be: Winter's Drift Pinot Noir

Natural in nature

If you've had enough of the hustle and bustle of city life, then finding a piece of Eden might be just right for you.

Escaping into the glorious natural wilds of the Western Cape is a real eye-opener - we often forget the expanse and difference of terrain within such short distances of each other. To see endless skies and experience absolute solitude, head to Tanagra wine and guest farm in McGregor; stunningly isolated, it's just you, the Karoo stars and a big, solo red wine.

My pick has to be: Springfield Whole Berry Cabernet Sauvignon

Pump it up

If life is too slow for you then get the adrenalin going with an adventure holiday that is packed with activities. River Rafters might be just up your street, though I'd probably wait until the weather gets warmer. For something a little more romantic, why not try a mini break in Noordhoek and go horse riding along the beachfront?

My pick has to be: Obviously, if you're going to be on the move, a PET bottle would come in handy but for a wind-down session in the evening, keep it frisky with Villiera Sauvignon Blanc

Pamper me

Sometimes you just need to completely relax and have the cares and worries of everyday life melt away. Spending time at a luxury spa or on an all-inclusive holiday can do wonders for the soul - equally, so can a bottle of good wine.

Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat in the Cederberg Mountains is a South African Natural Heritage site brimming with indigenous flora and fauna and varied species of birds and mammals. Its award-winning spa is going to set you up for the ultimate relaxation and pampering.

My pick has to be: Any wine by Cederberg of course!
