Zevenwacht Wine Estate is situated in the southern part of the Stellenbosch Wine Appellation in the Polkadraai region. It sits on a first ridge of hills just north of the False Bay coast where the estate is cooled in the heat of summer by breezes off the sea.

This slows up the ripening of the grapes which eventually means more colour and greater aromas and flavours in the resulting wine. The grapes are harvested off the south westerly facing slopes from trellised vines.  The vines give up an evenhanded 6 to 8 tons per hectare. A small crop but again it comes with the advantage of flavour packed into the grapes.  The weather conditions leading up to the harvest from the winter of 2012 to picking time gave forth small berries with a high ratio of skin to fruit. Initial fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks before spending 18 months in French oak barrels.  The wine was then prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Packed under a cork closure in a Burgundy shaped bottle, the Zevenwacht Syrah 2013 has a black label with elegant cursive writing.  In the glass it is a deeply opaque bloodplum red which pales to ruby garnet at the rim.

It smells like
Warm red and black berry fruits and ripe plums, with grinds of black and white pepper and cinnamon.

It tastes like
An easy entry with a generous, sappy, fruited palate with perfect balancing acidity, tannins and oak. Velvety soft with a lovely long tail.

It’s good with
This is a food wine and perfect for the full on Sunday Roast lunch treatment.  It works well with midweek supper dishes.
