Badsberg Wine Cellar
At this year’s South African Young Wine Show, Badsberg Wine Cellar, situated in Rawsonville in the Western Cape, became the first two-time, concurrent holder of both the General Smuts and Pietman Hugo trophies; their first triumph being in 2009.

The South African National Wine Show Association annually hosts the SA Young Wine Show to honour the top wines of the current vintage. The General Smuts Trophy is awarded to the wine that scores the highest out of all the entries from across South Africa. The Pietman Hugo Trophy is awarded to the cellar with the top five scoring wines.

As the wines are still young and of the current vintage, most of them do not get bottled immediately but are rather further matured or used in other wine blends.

Badsberg Wine Cellar’s natural sweet white wine won the General Smuts Trophy in 2009, while their wooded Pinotage came out tops in 2016. The 2009 winner sold out quickly; the 2016 Pinotage will be bottled later this year.

Apart from their winning Pinotage, Badsberg also boasts a series of wooded and unwooded Chenin Blanc wines.

Chenin Blanc 2015 (wooded)

The elegant 2015 Badsberg Chenin Blanc is aged in new American oak barrels for five months. The wine is straw-coloured and pleases with elegant aromas of tropical fruit and an undertone of oak; a good balanced pallet complimented by a fresh, fruity aftertaste.

The Badsberg Chenin Blanc 2015 was awarded a gold medal at the 2015 SA Young Wine Show as well as a silver medal at the 2016 Michelangelo Awards.

At R110 per bottle at cellar door, this wine is the perfect companion for your lazy summer picnics.

Chenin Blanc 2016 (wooded)

The Badsberg Chenin Blanc 2016 is a beautiful white wine with a slight greenish tint, a fruity nose and a pallet that reminds of tropical flavours followed by a burst of fresh guava aftertaste.

The Badsberg Chenin Blanc 2016 won a silver medal during the 2016 Veritas Awards.

At R38 per bottle at cellar door, this wine will cool down any warm summer’s day.
