Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar
On 1 December, Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar will be launching their much anticipated Lord Jackal wine range.

This exclusive collection will be produced in limited quantities and will only be available from their tasting room. The cellar had a very successful awards season where they received a silver medal for their La Perlé Rosé, gold for their Mount Cuvée, and a Gran d’Or medal for their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon at the prestigious Michelangelo awards. At SA’s oldest wine show, the SA Young Wine Show, the farm was also awarded a silver medal for their Red Muscadel as well as a gold medal for their Hanepoot.

You might be wondering what the story is behind the name of this range? Jim Spitsveld, a.k.a. Lord Jackal, is a well-known character in the Herbertsdale area. For years he protected local farmers’ flocks against beasts of prey. Jim grew up with owner Jantjie Jonker’s grandfather, and Jantjie fondly remembers Jim patrolling the veld, rifle over his shoulder, with his faithful hounds by his side. “We have decided to name our new range after Jim Spitsveld,” he says. “As a child I always admired him. This brave man was protecting the local community’s livestock all on his own. He has probably walked thousands of kilometres during his lifetime and today he is still one of the friendliest and most modest people I know.”

The Lord Jackal collection will feature a Chardonnay, Barbera, Cabernet Franc as well as Jakkalsvlei’s exclusive TROP, and will be available exclusively at their tasting room.

For the last couple of months, the Jakkalsvlei team has been hard at work making major improvements to the farm, some of which include a new entrance, a wider road as well as a second kitchen. This kitchen will be serving guests who would like to spend a lazy summer’s afternoon enjoying their pizzas on Jakkalsvlei’s lawn (no booking required). Renovations are set to be finished by the end of November, just in time for the holiday season.

MTB riders who want to cycle from Mossel Bay to the Jakkalsvlei farm will now also be able to make use of their brand-new shower facilities to cool down before spending the rest of the day with family and friends at the tasting room.

The restaurant is a popular destination for both locals as well as holidaymakers, and visitors are requested to make a booking beforehand by calling 028 735 2061, or emailing info@jakkalsvlei.co.za.
