Cementing its standing as one of the country’s leading wines, Zonnebloem was awarded Gold for the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon at the annual Veritas Awards - the longest running and most prestigious wine and brandy competition in South Africa – which took place on Friday night, 6 October 2017.

Having scooped various awards in the past, including a Gold Veritas in 2011, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a deep, ruby red full body made with grapes sourced from the south and south-westerly slopes of vineyards in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch Kloof, Helderberg and Jonkershoek, ensuring cooler microclimates.

“Excellent craftsmanship has been at the heart of the Zonnebloem brand since the 19th century, so to be consistently recognised by one of South Africa’s most authoritative and credible competitions for market-ready wines means that we are staying true to our strong heritage and maintaining out track-record of excellence,” says Zonnebloem cellar master Elize Coetzee.

Speaking about the award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Coetzee says that the wine was aged in new-fill French and American oak barrels for 14 months which resulted in intense ripe berry and rich plum aromas with elegant spices and hints of white pepper. “The palate is full and rich with a complex mixture of berry and plum flavours, gentle tannins and integrated wood spice.”

When asked which dishes pair well with the Cabernet Sauvignon, Coetzee says that it perfectly complements game or red meat dishes, but is also the type of wine that can be enjoyed on its own.

Coetzee concludes that achievements, such as the latest Gold award at the Veritas, are a testament to the team’s unwavering dedication to winemaking. “From the farms that produce our grapes, to the winemakers who use the skills they have learned and developed over generations to produce the rich varietals and blends that make up the Zonnebloem stable, there is a shared sense of commitment to excellence. It is always wonderful when this dedication is acknowledged and rewarded.”

The award-winning Zonnebloem wine can be delivered to your door when purchased online through the Vinotèque via Vinoteque.
