Protea Chenin Blanc 2021

Aromas of fresh apricot and nectarine mingle with ripe quince notes. Juicy and bright, the palate offers up succulent nectarine, melon and vibrant
lemon. Approachable, light and succulent, there is great harmony between the fruit and acidity. The appeal continues with satisfying length and gentle pear drop nuance on the finish.

in the vineyard : “Late, slow and steady” would be the best way to describe the 2021 vintage. The preceding winter was cold and wet, resulting in good dormancy
and healthy dam levels prior to the growing season. The cool weather continued into spring which in turn resulted in delayed but relatively even bud break, flowering and fruit set. The moderate summer temperatures slowed the ripening period and resulted in harvest starting about two weeks later than normal. The usually hot month of February was uncharacteristically cool, allowing for the gradual ripening of fruit with good flavours and acidity. An exceptional vintage which promises to deliver outstanding wines.

RAINFALL: 639.2mm

HARVESTING ENDED: 15/02/2021

in the cellar : The grapes were handpicked during the early morning hours at optimal ripeness and transported to the cellar. The fruit was both de-stemmed and whole bunch pressed and the juice was settled overnight. All parcels were kept separate and racked into fermentation with carefully selected yeast strain cultures. The wine spent time on the lees in stainless steel tanks, before being blended and bottled.
